Spells 101: Your First Working

Magick is structured attention applied over time to symbolic systems in order to reorganize identity and probability.

MAGUS also approaches Magick as sacred participation through attention, words, ritual, relationship and art. The working keeps its spiritual meaning.

Name the force

• Red — active. Desire, will and motion. What are you beginning?
• White — neutralizing. Permission and reconciliation. What conditions allow the working?
• Black — passive. Boundary and necessary ending. What must be cut or contained?

Choose the dominant force while keeping all three in view.

Work with Liquid Light

Liquid Light names the responsive substance within the MAGUS framework. Attention selects. Feeling charges. Repetition densifies. Release allows.

The Manual compares the completed scene to a stamp, feeling to its force, and the substance to wax. Make the impression; then lift the stamp.

Prepare, cast, release

1. Select. Write a small, precise target and what would confirm it. Set a review date.
2. Prepare. Choose a symbol with felt meaning. Check timing, arrange the space and settle into focused attention.
3. Enter. Inhabit one sensory moment of the completed state through your own eyes.
4. Impress. Speak, perform or sustain the symbolic instruction with its feeling alive. Hold until full, then release.
5. Record. Write what you actually did and observed. Return to the day.

Timing includes the clock, the charged moment and the process's shock points. Work with available support; you do not have to wait for a perfect sky.

Read the grimoire

At your review date, compare the record with the original target. Was the result specific? Could it be coincidence? Did it repeat? Review the field, necessary transformation and will before adjusting the working.
